Transgender beauty queen allowed to compete in Miss Universe competition

The Miss Universe Organization has felt the pressure and finally relented on their decision to disqualify British Columbia native Jenna Talackova from the Miss Universe Canada competition. GLAAD laid on the heat, but the last straw might’ve been when Jenna hired attorney Gloria Allred. That’s one woman you don’t want to mess with! She has every trash rag and blogger on speed dial. Gloria held a press conference with Jenna, and my guess is the bad publicity was more than the competition wanted to deal with. I wish I could say I believe they had a genuine change of heart, but this seems like some PR backtracking to me. It’s still a victory, and an example of the kind of change our community is able to create when we join forces and refuse to eat the bullshit we’re being fed.

Miss Universe Canada released a statement saying:

“The Miss Universe Organization will allow Jenna Talackova to compete in the 2012 Miss Universe Canada pageant provided she meets the legal gender recognition requirements of Canada, and the standards established by other international competitions.”
