Glamour in the Glebe

Who says Ottawa doesn’t have sparkle and glamour?

The Glebe neighbourhood activities group (yes, there is such a thing) is organizing Glamour in the Glebe tonight and Saturday in the Glebe Community Centre. Tonight’s opening party is from 6:30 to 9:30pm; it includes a fashion show and cash bar ($6). Tomorrow from 10am to 4pm is free!

There will be work from 30 jewellers, such as the incredibly sophisticated and elegant pieces of local talent Jasmine Virani and many others, including Eliza Von Baeyer, featured in this Ottawa Citizen article.

“[Eliza Von Baeyer]’s fun and funky, but classically designed, glass pendants, pins,
earrings, bracelets, and rings feature her own collages created from
original images from 1950s women’s magazines, old postage stamps,
atlases or maps. Von Baeyer also favours selected details from fine
Japanese patterned paper. Vintage buttons, glass beads and found
trinkets or charms and even pieces of disassembled vintage jewelry are
sometimes added to individualize her pieces,” explains the Ottawa Citizen.

Jasmine Virani’s Birch Bark silver necklace.

From Virani’s latest collection: Buffalo.

Watch this CBC video of Virani’s work and process. One of my favourite pieces is the Birch Bark silver necklace. It is beautiful artisanal work: hand cut, soldered, hammered, textured, oxidized and buffed by the artist-jeweller.

A nice event to meet local talent and maybe even buy a gift for Mother’s Day?
