A proposed solution to the Capital Xtra newspaper box eviction has been blocked, the newspaper learned Dec 12.
Responding to pressure from patrons in November, Broadway Bar & Grill in Kanata asked that the distinctive purple box be removed. The newspaper complied, but queer university students arranged a kiss-in on Dec 7 to protest.
Good news arrived from The Works — which has a location in the same stripmall as Broadway. They agreed to host the box in front of their store.
But Urbandale, the company that owns the strip mall, has blocked that solution, saying they only allow The Ottawa Citizen, Sun and Renter’s News boxes.
The box had been in the stripmall for over a year. Management at The Works is considering a proposal to have a handful of Capital Xtras distributed in their foyer.
